Decorative Privy Bags....Yep!

My friend Jill shared this great little exhibit with me. It is at the Cocalico Valley Historical Society in Ephrata, PA. It looks like it would be worth a stop if you are nearby. The exhibit runs through May 15th.

Seriously, who has ever heard of a quilted privy bag?
Jill writes, "I was told that these bags were hung in the outhouses ONLY for company, and pages of the Sears catalog, or whatever paper, were put in them."

I think they are too cute to go in an outhouse!! Wouldn't you agree?

  11. LOL, we could make them to put by the computer to hold the printed out instructions and pictures we are constantly using up our ink on.

  17. I have never heard of a privy bag! The only privy I have ever been in scared me to death. It was in my Granparents cabin and there was a huge wasps nest up in the corner. I was on 6 years old and terrified!

  18. There is a high end antique quilt dealer who has one of these on her website for the paltry sum of $685! It is lovely. Shall we all decorate the necessary rooms in our homes with quilts now?

  19. Well, I do have a quilt hung in my indoor privy but it doesn't hold the Sears Catalogue. I guess I need to make a privy bag for that room. Now I just need to find a Sears catalogue to stock it.

Thanks for sharing the photos. Always something interesting on your blog!
