Red & Green Blocks

Here's the start of a Christmas quilt I am working on this year. I plan on making 3 blocks a month. By October I'll have what I need then I will still have time to get a top done and possibly quilting. The block on the left is one I made last month and the fabric/color placement is where I wanted them. The next two blocks didn't turn out that way.....
Who knew texting and sewing was not a good idea! lol I'll leave them and it should add some interest to the quilt.
These are the Sally Post blocks I am doing this year too. Gaye at Sentimental Stitches is making them free for a limited time. Next time I get to a quilt store I will purchase a red for the setting triangles.  I also plan on doing three a month.
Somehow this block will be the center of a little AAQI quilt called the Dark Side. I haven't quite thought it through yet and was making it as a test. It's a pretty cool block.

  1. Thanks for the reminder of the Sentimental Stitches Blocks. I didn't remember to go and get the new ones and was missing a few. The red and green is gonna be stunning, as will the Sally Post. That is a very nice black and white also.

  2. It is great that you are keeping your renegade blocks. I agree that they will add interest to your quilt. I have been downloading the patterns for the Sally Post quilt but I haven't started making it yet - it is on the list.

  5. I just love red and green and am very glad you are keeping your "misfit" blocks for the quilt. It will definitely add interest. I always wonder about the stories behind the odd blocks in antique quilts but I am quite sure none were the result of texting and sewing. Perhaps chatting and sewing, however. Have you had any problems with the red fabric you used in your curved piece on the left Sally Post block? I have lots of that and am using it in my MM. I always prewash but it bled just a bit after I washed my first block. Fortunately, not enough to cause alarm. But, at the last BAS meeting there was a full album quilt shown using the Quaker Quilts fabrics that bled terribly. I don't think I got the story right so I don't want to condemn the Quaker Quilts fabrics because I absolutely love them. I am just wondering what your experience has been. I bought most of the stash I own at the Wild Rose quilt shop near Seattle.

  6. The red & green blocks look like they are supposed to be that way! I like your plans for the year. Very organized. I still have to think through my plans for this year. I'll do that when I get home in a couple weeks.

  7. Actually, I like the idea of a few rogue blocks in a quilt!
Thanks for the mention of the Sally Post blocks. I had only caught and printed out a few of the last blocks offered when she first made them available. I just printed out the first 19 and will watch for the few now that I still don't have.
(And thanks, Taryn, for the heads up to watch the JR reds. I have a bunch of that in my stash.)

  10. Oooh! i love all your blocks! I had a hard time figuring out how to get the free pattern for the appliqued block at sentimental stitches. Maybe it's early and I need some coffee....:/

  12. I like the extra kick the red and green blocks have with the varied placement. Maybe you should keep texting Randy while you work on it. : )
"Dark Side"--love it, the name and the block.
Another beautiful applique quilt that will make me wish I did applique--but not enough to actually do it. *LOL*

  18. Looking at your Christmas blocks I realized that I have collected some reds and greens for a Christmas quilt and they are still just waiting. Maybe I can do a block or two a month and end up with a quilt (eventually).
Course the pattern I won from you still isn't done, but Iam on the center appligue now.
The new applique pattern is pulling me too.

  19. Nice to have a plan to get things accomplished Lori! I am not quite that prepared but do have some ufos on the table, one of them being Pink Lemonade from last year. Needs to be hand quilted and so that seems easy enough to get going on in this soggy cold weather! The "Dark Side" block is super cool!

  21. Very good blocks you showed today. Funny, texting and quilting. I just saved the first 19 blocks of Sally Post, thanks for the heads up. The quilt Taryn is talking about I saw online and was gasping when I saw how much the dyes had ran on this beautiful album quilt. I'm a prewasher but sometimes pieces do get missed.

Love the reds and greens together always makes a great quilt.

  23. I can't text and quilt at the same time. I can barely text all by itself. Little keyboards on android phone don't match my big, clumsy finger tips. Adore the black and white "harlequin" type block. Very graphic.

  24. Lori, I am Anne, a friend of Randy's who met you this summer at Sisters. Is the Red and Green block one that is part of a set of blocks you are posting on your blog for a December quilt? Or what is the name of the block? I love the red and white and would like to try some (i.e. copy you).

  25. I agree your two different blocks wil add intereest to your red and green quilt.
I have been printing out the Sally Post blocks too. I haven't started sewing yet, but it is on my list for this year. Your blocks are great!!! I have considered doing mine with Kaffe Fassett style fabrics.... just to be different! Lol!
Looking forward to seeing what you add to the AAQI centre block.

  26. Next to red and white, green and red is the perfect color combo. I love the way you're pacing yourself with your projects. It's a good plan!

  27. You know I love absolutely anything in red and green and what a great idea to do three a month, the brain is ticking on that idea. I love the dark side block too, great name, I wish I could be as clever with names.

  28. Gosh you're thinking forward about the Christmas 2013 already? You're making me nervous! LOL! I only managed 1 Sally Post block so far :( I'm not very proficient in applique, I think it must be the needles ... :D BTW yours are looking very pretty.

  29. I love the all green blocks!!! I think it's ok to text and sew at the same time!!! I love your new projects for the next year! You set the bar pretty darn high, Lori!! :-)

  31. clever you to start a Christmas quilt now! love the blocks.

  32. You sound like a lady with a plan. Things all mapped out. Your little mistake in the red and green blocks will just add charm to the finished quilt. And it will make a wonderful quilt for Christmas time use.

I worked on prepping applique parts for the porch quilt. A lot of work and I still have more to prep.

  33. I just love coming over here! There is ALWAYS inspiration! You just inspire me to keep going, however s-l-o-w
    that may be!! ha!

I am crazy over red green white/cream quilts. How fabulous it will be for you come October when all the blocks are done in time for Christmas!!

  34. Wow, you have some wonderful projects in the works, as always! Your red/green blocks are beautiful. I think the quilting-while-texting blocks will add wonderful interest. I just had to save the Sally Post blocks, but don't think I can start another long-term applique project! Look forward to seeing what you come up with for the dark side block.

  35. That's funny about the red and green, I think it will give the quilt some quirkiness and with the two mismatched blocks, you will always have a story to tell about the quilt.

  36. I want to know what expletive you scratched out!
Keep the greenie one its great...and it will make you smile every time you see it!

  37. I love the red and green blocks and I'm glad you're using all three! They are happy mistakes. The applique project is lovely and I can't wait to see how you finish the "Dark Side"!

  38. Lori your red and green is beautiful...can't wait to see Dark Side grow...I love it. I have a small top, backing and binding I'd love to send to you for AAQI if that's OK.

  39. I like that your red and green block are different - why not make them all mixed? Stunning AAQI block.
